How does sleep deprivation affect your health? RESEARCH SHOWS LACK OF SLEEP CAN AFFECT YOUR HEALTH! There have been many different perspectives and theories on how sleep deprivation can affect on health. Sleep deprivation occurs when a person is unable to sleep and does not get enough sleep. This is also known as “waking” (sleep.2014) and not getting enough sleep; 'lack of sleep'. This literature review will cover four main concepts of sleep deprivation. The key ideas in this article would be about the research done and how many hours a person should sleep, certain disorders, and what effects sleep loss will have on a person. Again according to numerous research conducted by the United States, United Kingdom and Australia (sleep. 2014) a person usually needs to sleep for a certain period of time depending on whether it is a weekday or a weeknight. Adults are supposed to sleep between "6 and 9 hours a night" (Sleep, 2014). However, according to sleep surveys conducted by the United States in 2009 and 1998, 6-hour sleep per night increased from "12% in 1998 to 20% in 2009" (sleep. 20149. REM sleep decreases after one night of sleep for "100 minutes" every night (MARZANO et al, 2010), in the same period in which the survey, there was a decrease to see the average of individuals sleeping for 8 hours" (sleep.2014). For 8 hours there was a decrease from 35% of people to 28% (sleep 2014).
