Protein: There is no set upper limit for protein. Protein intake should not exceed more than 35% of total dietary needs and no less than 10% (Whitney, Folfes 182). One of the side effects of protein deficiency is slowing down the body's processes. Protein deficiency can also shut down some bodily processes. Protein deficiency can cause slowed growth, impaired brain and kidney function, a weak immune system, and inadequate absorption of nutrients (Whitney, Rolfes 182). Protein deficiency can cause malnutrition, which also affects the intake of other vitamins and minerals. It has also been reported that protein deficiency can lead to changes in skin and hair, loss of muscle mass, and fatigue (Coleman). Protein deficiency can have harmful effects on the body, but consuming too much protein can also cause harm. In our textbook by Whitney and Rolfes it states that “high-protein diets have been implicated in numerous chronic diseases including heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, obesity, and kidney stones.” Protein toxicity can also cause the buildup of toxins in the blood which can lead to nausea, diarrhea, and in some cases death (Coleman). Carbohydrates: The lower limit for carbohydrate intake is 20 grams or less. This can have serious and dangerous side effects. When you don't consume enough carbohydrates, you may experience irregular bowel movements. Additionally, your energy decreases severely, which could lead to fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and headaches. Limiting your carbohydrate intake to less than 20 grams per day can also cause ketosis. Your body experiences ketosis when it no longer has enough glucose for the brain and other muscles to function. This process then breaks down the fat, which...... half of the paper ......les 323).” As a cofactor, vitamin C helps form the fibrous structural protein of connective tissues known as collagen. Collagen contributes to the formation of bones and teeth and helps heal separated tissues and form scars. Side effects of vitamin C deficiency include bleeding gums, broken capillaries, muscle degeneration, rough skin, weakened bones, anemia, and increased infections. There are also features of hysteria and depression. In the most severe cases, sudden death is likely, due to massive internal hemorrhage (Whitney, Rofles 325). Vitamin C toxicity occurs at 2000 milligrams per day for adults. Side effects of vitamin C include gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea. Vitamin C toxicity can also interfere with medical regimens such as tests used to detect glucose or ketones in the diagnosis of diabetes (Whitney, Rofles 325).
