During the first and second generations of video game consoles, many electronic companies jumped on the console bandwagon. After all, they built products with the same parts. A year after the release of the PlayStation, Nintendo tried to defeat the newcomer-turned-giant of the gaming industry by releasing its own 3D game console, the Nintendo 64, but Nintendo remained faithful to the cartridge format, which inevitably led to its downfall. Precisely for this reason developers were attracted to the PlayStation ("History of the Sony PlayStation"). Before the release of the first PlayStation, Sony had never entered the video game market. Sony had made some attempts to make computer products, but when CD-ROM technology was launched, Sony began to gain some market share. The PlayStation's origins are traced back to Nintendo because Nintendo sought to integrate disc-based software into its gaming hardware. Sony was the second company to introduce disc-based software into games, but even though it was the second, PlayStation made disc-based software the most popular. The PlayStation was first released on December 3, 1994. Because the PlayStation was thin, sleek, and equipped with a revolutionary controller, Sony's console was a huge success. Before companies were interested in disc-based games, game cartridges dominated the gaming industry, but Sony challenged this when they used discs in their new system. Game companies sometimes didn't use disc-based software in their games because cartridges were cheaper, but the new CD technology that Sony incorporated into the PlayStation had increased storage space which allowed it to have better video and audio quality than other consoles of the time. 2 is a sixth generation video game...... middle of paper...... no, Sony has made extreme improvements to its product to make it one of the best-selling consoles today. As of May 2014, PlayStation 4 has already sold over 7 million consoles and over 20.5 million games (Molina). While evolving every few years and continually adding new features in updates to systems that could get them, PlayStation has come a long way since its first release in 1994. If it weren't for competition with other gaming system developers like Microsoft, Sega, and Nintendo , Sony wouldn't have made it this far in the gaming industry. The constant competition between different companies is the main reason why companies introduce new features in updates and new systems. Sony's latest PlayStation model could be one of the best next-gen consoles around, the PlayStation 4 still has a long way to go.
