Throughout JJR Tolkien's The Hobbit, many themes come into play to provide a better understanding of the novel. The underlying theme is the struggle between good and evil as Gandalf and the dwarves battle evils during their journey through Middle-earth. The battle manifests itself in goblins, trolls and spiders where good always triumphs over evil. Even though the journey is about stealing gold from the dragon, there is still some moral clarity in this: the dragon stole the gold and set fire to the city. The dwarves want to fix the situation and take back what was rightfully theirs. The first event we encounter in the struggle between good and evil is the altercation with the trolls. During their journey they notice a faint light ahead of them and send Bilbo to investigate as he was thought to be the thief. As Bilbo approaches, he notices a group of trolls sitting around a fire. Bilbo tries to steal one of their bags of money but in doing so attracts the attention of the trolls, who capture Bilbo. While the trolls hold Bilbo hostage, the dwarves begin searching for Bilbo who has not returned and the trolls devise a plan to hide in the trees and capture each of the dwarves. While the trolls decide what to do with their hostages, Gandalf appears and imitates one of the trolls and starts an argument between them, distracting them from the oncoming morning sun and thus turning the trolls to stone. In this sequence good triumphs over evil, the dwarves were not doing anything bad just trying to find food, by doing so the evil trolls attacked them for nothing and were about to eat them. In chapter four a huge storm breaks out and the dwarves and Bilbo find shelter in a cave, which actually belongs to a group of goblins. Durin... in the center of the paper... to his possessions and how his journey opened his eyes to a deeper meaning in life. The evil in the story was just a test, in an attempt to convince Bilbo to give up and return to his life of comfort, but he didn't and saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Tolkien wanted to show the reader how we can overcome our flaws in life such as greed and temptation by stepping out of our comfort zone. Good versus Evil is represented in The Hobbit through many different events and characters in the novel. Showing us that what we think may not always be what we want, it really is. Bilbo had no doubt in his mind that they would fail in their mission. Yet, with all the odds against them, they won, good defeated evil, just like in the Bible God cares for his children and protects them from evil, but they must make the right choices and work for his respect and his honor..
