Roman Baths The Romans are known for their superb military, a great empire that stretches from modern-day England to parts of Africa, from Portugal to Iraq. Additionally, the Romans were known for creating what we know today as the Senate. Another important thing that the Romans are famous for is their brilliant engineering skills. Without the engineering skills of the Romans, some of the buildings and structures may not exist today. One of the Romans' greatest engineering challenges was the construction of the baths to which almost everyone in the city would later go. Imagine being a Roman citizen, going to the bathroom after a long day of work, only to sit down and relax for another day of work tomorrow. Legend has it that Rome was founded by Romulus after killing his brother Remus. The legend begins when Romulus and Remus are abandoned by their parents, placed in a basket and made to fall into the Tiber river. A female wolf discovered the twins in the basket and nursed them. After a while a shepherd arrived and saw the she-wolf and the twins Romulus and Remus, the shepherd took the two and raised them. When the twins became adults, Romulus and Remus thought it would be a good idea to found a city near where the she-wolf found them. Romulus and Remus began to argue over the location of the city, and then Romulus killed his brother Remus. After killing his brother, Romulus founded his city and gave it his name, Rome. 753 BC would be the date on which Romulus founded Rome. The first inhabitants of Rome are believed to have come from a tribe called the Latins. The Latins came from the plains of Lazio and were successful farmers and traders. As the community became wealthy and successful, nearby areas began to sense this new rich city of Rome and grow jealous. When the Romans began to become... middle of paper... Rome. For the Romans Minerva was the goddess of wisdom, magic, medicine, arts, commerce and defense. A common way Minerva was expressed was by using relief. The Romans placed reliefs of him on the bathroom walls as decoration and to show some gratitude towards him. In conclusion, the Roman baths were a great engineering feat accomplished by the Romans. Bathing in Roman times was taken very seriously. Today, when a person goes to a spa, they may not notice it, but some of the spa features were used in ancient Rome. For example, a warm room is still used today. Without the engineering skills of the Romans, some of the buildings and structures may not exist today. Decorating these bathrooms with artwork from the gods was a sign of gratitude and was a great way to decorate bathrooms. Together with precious marbles and stones they make the spa attractive for a Roman citizen.
