Many businesses go through changes over the years, whether it is increasing their workforce or downsizing, businesses need to have systems in place to deal with the many changes. Looking at British Airways (BA) and what happened from the start of the strike until the introduction of the new swipe card system, BA did not provide answers to employees prior to the implementation of the new system. The BA reasoning for the new system should have been discussed before the installation to get feedback from the employee and restrictions may occur with the new system. Let employees question some of the BA manager's antics like manipulating employee time or swapping shifts without asking the employee. BA's change caused a domino effect against employees which led to this strike which would cost BA the loss of over 100,000 customers due to negligence in communication between employee and employer. When implementing any change you need to understand the needs of your employees. When employees understand the process and internalize the transition, they are likely to adapt to the change. As stated by Moore (2014) “Managing change requires understanding risks; estimate the necessary resources; and plan for contingencies and what needs to happen before the change can be implemented. BA's forced key card change did not provide employees with enough information to help employees understand exactly what the system entailed, leaving the employee to view the move as unfair. Leaving employees in the dark can lead to many conclusions. As a consultant I would recommend BA to map out the change and explain the actual details of the system implementation, allowing employees to understand what the change will bring to their daily routine. Giving employees the opportunity to change will cause less confusion... middle of paper ......changes versus the risks and benefits of staying the same if they are not yet ready to implement the change Show other people how the change will be helpful before expecting them to behave differently.” BA must always plan ahead to avoid any operational delays in the future - this will not only benefit the company, but also the employees will have confidence in their employer.
