With the characters in “Everyday Use” and “The Red Convertible” the reader is able to feel sympathy towards them. The characters in both stories have completely different relationships with each other, but are somehow similar in the way they love their brothers. Both brothers in each story show mutual loyalty and unconditional love. Although Maggie and Dee are so different when it comes to their lifestyle, in the end they will always love each other and do everything that is best for each other. At the end of “The Red Convertible,” when Henry is believed to be drowning, Lyman feels not grief over his brother's death but what seems like relief. Lyman knows that Henry is in a better place and will no longer have to suffer through the emotional pain he felt
