God is a very real presence in my life. This God of grace for me is not a still, small voice, but a huge presence. It's a voice I don't always follow faithfully, but God's direction for my life has become very apparent to me. My journey of faith has been tortuous. I grew up from childhood in the church to young adulthood, away from worship opportunities. Despite the distance I put between myself and God, there was always a calling that became harder to resist. I found myself involved in an increasing number of outreach activities, frequent church attendance, and greater satisfaction with life in general. I felt more comfortable living as myself. If it seems vague or hard to understand, it is. It is not a clear and divine vision. The human desire for evil is driven by the choice of self-interest over that of others. Humanity, consciously or unconsciously, uses our God-given free will to make choices in our lives. It is these decisions that chart the path of evil in our world. This God of grace permeates our world in a way that envelops humanity waiting for us to turn away from evil and sin. When we pray for God's presence, I pray that we can open our hearts to the already present. During Hurricane Katrina, my family had three homes nearly destroyed, and they all had to be completely rebuilt. Six vehicles were damaged beyond repair. The psychological damage done to my young niece continues to haunt her and has required professional treatment. I don't consider them evil. While these certainly cause pain, they are all naturally occurring in our world. Some of them are the consequences or result of human action: a house built too close to the shore, a person smoking excessively or participating in any activity that leads to negative outcomes such as disease. There are other tragedies that are beyond my comprehension, a child born with cystic fibrosis, a terrible accident, the death of my brother from illness, mental illness and others. These could be labeled evil and I wouldn't argue because of the pain they cause. The Harper Collins Bible Dictionary defines evil as “all forms of evil are regarded as ultimately caused by the disobedience and rebellion of the human race.” Yet we still have these mysteries that we live with in this world and we can only look forward to this revelation in the world to
