My family has always taught me that even though we come from a background where opportunities are offered, we still have to work hard to earn them. People always assumed that school was easy or that buying clothes was no problem, but my family was humble about what we had and we had to work for the results we wanted. If social class were a more sensitive topic like race and ethnicity, people wouldn't so often judge based on what a person wears or how they were raised. Education is a big issue within social class in terms of the opportunities that children get, whether it's going to college or attending a private high school. In the book Diversity, Oppression, and Change it is stated that “there is a persistent gap between upper- and lower-class access to university education” (Marseille, Kulis 2009 56). This quote is disturbing because even if a person is of a lower class, everyone should have the opportunity to go to college or receive an education of some kind. Achieving opportunities is never easy, but knowing that one person's social class can affect someone else's future is the most devastating thing because that person didn't really work for the chance to do so..
