Knowledge is Power Francis Bacon once stated, "knowledge is power" (Psychology Today). Knowing and understanding how something works gives you power over those who don't understand. If you have knowledge about something, you not only know how it works, but you have the ability to then discover how to change it. In this system of the United States of America, those who know the history and patterns also have the power to change it. Having the knowledge of history that people of color in this country were never designed to be in power, gives me the ability to understand that the system was designed this way. Rather than fight the existing system as the previous generation did during the Civil Rights Movement, my proposal is to change the system. The facts clearly state that the system is not designed for minorities to excel. “Most Americans are not middle class but working class: 62% of Americans are working class” (Rieger, p. 35). What Rieger didn't mention is how many of these working class people were minority in this country. The facts still stated that race matters. Rieger states that “African American children born in the lowest quartile are nearly twice as likely to remain there as adults compared to white children whose parents have identical incomes, and they are four times less likely to reach the highest quartile” (Rieger, page 43). Another alarming statistic was that “individuals and families at greatest risk of poverty are men with less than a college education, people of color (especially blacks and Hispanics), working families, and families headed by women” (Rieger , page 45). To reinforce these statistics, Rieger stated that “In 2003, a person of col......middle of paper......would not have been of benefit to the issues of power differentials found in our society. Ringer's focus on repairing broken relationships is what almost took my thoughts from system change to individual mindset change. Jesus asked us to forgive those who have sinned against us. Through James Cone's readings, God was shown as being angry at the oppressor. With this mentality of mending broken relationships, it appears closer to Jesus' request to forgive others. My conclusion is now stated to not only change the system, but also to change our mindset, as Romans 12:2 states: “Do not copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way to think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect." (Gate of the Bible).
