The manipulation of time is a major common feature of all films, from early black-and-white cinema to modern films. The filmmakers use many different editing techniques to manipulate the flow of time and compress the film's story into an acceptable length. Virtually all films use time compression, often used for the purpose of creating dramatic effect. Slow motion was invented by Professor August Musger (1868 - 1929) and is described as an action that is made to appear slower than normal by passing film through the camera at a faster than normal speed or by playing a videotape recording more slowly . A filmmaker achieves slow motion by running film through his camera at speeds greater than the standard 24 frames per second; subsequent projection at 24 frames per second slows the action. Fast motion is just the opposite and is explained as an action that appears to move faster than normal on the screen, achieved by filming the action at a slower than normal speed in the camera and then projecting it at normal speed.
