Topic > A realistic perspective on my role as an assistant principal

Case study questions and suggested activities I believe Amber has a realistic perspective on her role as an assistant principal. She recognizes that part of her responsibility involves disciplinary issues and student supervision, but she also wants to work closely with teachers to help them develop their professional goals and teaching methods. She is thoughtful and understands that as a teacher she has “benefited from the feedback and guidance she has received from her principal” and wants to do the same for the staff at this school (Kowalski, p. 124). I believe she is committed to students and faculty and wants to make changes to improve the academic process for students. I understand that putting a competent person in the wrong position can lead to years of pain, low productivity, and can even cause obstacles in trying to achieve not only the organization's goals, but also your own personal goals and satisfaction. The reason I chose the third option when identifying possible solutions is because staying in that school would be a challenge for Amber that I feel she can overcome. Furthermore, there is no guarantee that, when transferring to another school, he will not encounter the same problems of negativity and complacency that exist where he currently works. I also thought this school needed someone like her who could “inspire a shared vision” and “foster an environment of collaboration by building trust and facilitating relationships” within the school (Kouzes and Posner, p.26). If I were in Amber's situation and I decided to stay in school and I would have insisted the principal allow me to work with teachers on instructional issues. Even though it might be against it... halfway through the paper... they start to see those small changes and realize that they can really have a positive effect on the way students see school: it will motivate everyone, both students and teachers, to continue to try to reduce that existing gap in graduation rates. In conclusion, I do not believe that Amber's perspective regarding her role as assistant principal was unrealistic. I believe, just as you did, that setting high expectations for students and staff members can have a positive outcome on their performance. She was also committed to fostering an environment of teamwork and collaboration within the school and was insightful about the pervasive conflict that existed between teachers and administrators. I think staying in school and challenging himself would be the best solution to try to resolve the concerns and conflicts he faced.
