“John laughs at me, of course,” The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charoleette Perkin Gilman, allows the reader to get a sense of the terrors that young women face by her controlling husband, who ultimately drives her to madness. When analyzing the gender differences between men and women in the story The Yellow Wallpaper it became evident that men have greater authority over women. Charlotte Perkin Gilman describes a short story of a young woman who encounters depression that worsens after receiving unusual treatment from her husband John. Using feminist theory, the reader can analyze how The Yellow Wallpaper embodies the struggles faced by women in the 1800s and in the present day, while also referring to the author's experience of living in a male-dominated society. A feminist, Gilman lived during the time when women were oppressed by their own basic rights. The short story Yellow Wallpaper embodies the author's experience of being treated differently from men because she was exclusively a woman. He believed that women should be able to work outside their private home and be independent of men. Gilman argued that men and women should share or have equal experience in the field of work. Gilman was an inspirational Western feminist who shared her experience of depression and nervousness through her short story The Yellow Wallpaper. Women in this story are depicted as a minority gender. For example, Jane is not allowed to think for herself, move around without her husband's permission, or even have a say in his treatment. Her husband John is a doctor of high rank in society and highly regarded. Because of this, John feels he has the right to imprison his wife and brainwash her into believing that she is really... middle of paper... y, which ultimately leads to her thriving for the independence from male authority. The Yellow Wallpaper proves that if one gender doesn't respect the other, their relationship between the two turns into a dictatorship. The only way for two genders to be treated equally is for them to follow the same rules and restrictions in society. Society must enforce these rules and restrictions so that people follow them. For example, if a man is allowed to work as a police officer, women can too because she has trained just as hard and earned her position. Just because they might be mentally and physically strong doesn't make it right that society doesn't allow them to work. This is exactly what feminist theory fights for, equal treatment of men and women. Just as one race should no longer be superior to another, gender should be treated equally.
