American Dream DeferredWhat is the American Dream? Is it a dream to have a house, a well-paying job or have a lot of money? The American Dream is being postponed as we speak and many people still struggle to achieve their American Dream. There are many factors that can cause a person to postpone their American dream. Due to the lack of jobs, foreclosures and inflation are what can cause a dream to be postponed. In the poem "Harlem" by Langston Hughes it says "What happens to a dream deferred?" “Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?” these lines suggest that a dream may begin to loosen its freshness and that over time it will begin to wither and become less valuable. In the fourth and fifth lines it says "Or fester like a sore... And then run away?" which means the dream stays there and never leaves the person. In the sixth line of the poem it says “Does it smell like rotten meat?” meaning the dream may start to lose its hope and start to slowly decay.
