Lewis may believe that friendship has a crown, but he does not believe that friendship and the appreciative love that motivates it are the realest of loves. He believes that agape, or charity, is the supreme and ruling love. He would not consider friendship and appreciation as a dominant love because it can be a source of virtue, but also a source of vice. Lewis then goes on to explain that actual friendship, this “crown of life” as Aristotle says, is not necessary. Lewis argues that friendship is the least necessary and natural of loves. By this he did not mean that actual friendship is unnatural, but that it is the least dependent on our biology and therefore is not necessary. Moderns often see this notion of friendship as an objection, but for Lewis it is not an objection. Lewis believes that the least necessary or useless things in life are the best, since we love them not because we need them, but because they are teleological, as Aristotle would say
