However, a new and growing problem has emerged: female drunk drivers. The US Department of Transportation released a study showing there was a 30% increase in arrests of women for drunk driving. The same study shows that there has been a 7.5% decrease in men arrested for drunk driving (Drunk Driving by Women). Male drivers tend to get caught more often than women due to men drinking in bars after work. Women are less likely to be caught drunk driving because they tend to drink at home rather than at a bar. Statistics show that every 51 minutes in the United States someone dies in a drunk driving accident, the equivalent of 27 people every day (www.dosomething.org). Instead of choosing to walk, take a taxi, or have a designated driver, drivers choose to drive. By choosing to drive while intoxicated, they risk everything. In addition to choosing an alternative route home, repeat offenders should use ignition interlocks (drunk driving). Laboratory studies have shown that most drivers, even experienced ones, have problems with a BAC as low as 0.05 (Fell, JC). Further studies have shown that most people who have a BAC of 0.05 have an impaired rate of 30-50% (Fell, JC). Although stricter laws are controversial, their implementation would be beneficial not only to drivers, but also to drivers.
