Topic > Symbolism of the Confederate Flag - 1354

If you pick up a history book, you can go back hundreds of years to see how African Americans and other ethnicities were treated in the South back then, but also how they are still treated in America today . In a national poll conducted on www.Debate.org, more than 30% of Americans said the Confederate flag is racist in how it represents a nation based on slavery and segregation. Most people who do not support the Confederate flag could be classified into a group called Reconstructionists, meaning they do not appreciate the tradition and pride set aside for the Confederate flag. The flag is morally despised as a reminder of the hard times of African Americans during the times of the Confederacy. The famous rapper, entrepreneur-superstar, Kanye West recently entered into the debate over the symbols of the Confederate flag. The black rapper showed up to his "Yeezus Tour" dressed in several items of clothing with the controversial Southern flag embroidered all over it. It seems that Kanye wants to make a statement and indulge in profits by behaving riskily and wearing a flag that most people of his ethnicity don't like. Dave Cook, a hip-hop historian and associate professor at San Francisco State, said: "Kanye is in danger of greenlighting something that is overtly racist, and I don't think he has any plan in mind for how to educate people,” the cook said.
