David CeronVentoPolitical Science 10324 April 2014Animal FarmGeorge Orwell's Animal Farm is a book that shows what can happen in a society governed by an oppressive government. Using farm animals, George Orwell shows how an oppressive government can be disastrous and even limiting. Although the book was originally considered to be a book that paralleled the effects of communism, in more recent times the book has also been shown to parallel events that occurred in what is known as the Arab Spring. Currently, the countries involved in the Arab Spring have started to rebel and revolt against their governments that oppress them in the hope of gaining freedom and equality among the people. These countries include Bahrain, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen and Syria. It is in these countries that people have become overly frustrated and angry at their governments treating them unfairly. While some have succeeded in overthrowing their government, there are still those who are struggling. However, Tunisia is not one of the troubled countries, but is actually one that has been successful in its revolution. It is precisely in the country of Tunisia that we see many similarities with its revolution in George Orwell's book. This article will attempt to illustrate the equivalences between the events that occurred in Animal Farm but also in the Tunisian revolution. One of the first parallels that Animal Farm has with the Tunisian revolution is the way in which both revolutions were triggered and set in motion. In the book, the character "Old Major", being one of the oldest and most respected animals on the farm, has a dream in which the animals were free from their human oppressors and lived together in harmony. The character "Old Major" proceeds to take...... middle of paper ...... the very same methods these Arab dictators use to spread fear among innocent citizens. In conclusion, one can clearly see the similarities between the animals in the book as well as the citizens of the country of Tunisia, similarities in both oppression and revolution. Similarities including how a revolution is initiated and initiated, the social injustices suffered by innocent citizens, and the control over freedom of thought. Although Tunisia was successful in its revolution, there are still Arab countries that still have to struggle. Society as a whole must realize the dangers and costs of oppressive governments, much like the dictatorships involved in the Arab Spring. While Animal Farm may just be a book that uses farm animals as help, it effectively depicts the results and consequences of oppressive governments, particularly involved in the Arab Spring..
