When the word "vampire" comes to mind, people think of the traditional pale-faced, evil bloodsuckers who wear a cape and kill people while they sleep. Wrong! Nowadays, the image of a vampire is that of a beautiful, polite, and loving person who protects humans. The new cultural phenomenon Twilight is building a new degrading image of vampires that slaps all previous authors, directors, writers, etc. which helped give the monster its unique image in the past. Just search through articles, databases and other resources, vampires are depicted as malignant and monstrous creatures. First of all, the vampire is famous for its dark and mysterious image associated with fear and death. In many ways, “the vampire can be seen through its most basic characterization as the bringer of death” (Stevens par. 3) and evokes a “fringe world of darkness, secrecy, vulnerability, excess and horror” (Stevens par. 6) . Obviously, the vampire has adopted a dark, scary and mysterious image. Next, vampires are famous for their unique characteristics. Dictionary.com defines the vampire as “a supernatural being, commonly believed to be a reanimated corpse, said to suck the blood of sleeping people at night” (dictionary.com). Vampires are also known for their characteristic weakness: sucking like "various tailsman and herbs" (Funk and Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia), but the only way to kill a vampire is "only by cremation or if a stake is driven into them heart" (Funk and Wagnall). Wagnall's New World Encyclopedia). Another distinct and commonly known characteristic of vampires is their fear of light as it could potentially kill them. Emotionally, vampires are seen almost as sex symbols as they “indulge their desires… middle of paper… and love the living. Then again, since when do vampires protect humans? Vampires are supposed to be creatures that ruthlessly prey on humans, not cold-blooded creatures that ensure humans' safety. Besides, what kind of vampire refuses to drink human blood? Isn't this the most basic and well-known characteristic of a vampire? Apparently, Twilight has changed the most fundamental and distinctive trait of the monster called vampire, the thirst for human blood. What do you call a vampire who doesn't drink blood? This change led Yabroff to state that “Twilight pushed the vampire myth to its extreme consequences” (Yabroff par.7). Therefore, there are many differences between the original vampire and the new version of Twilight. The past works of all fictional writers, directors, etc. they were all spat out by the new refined image of the vampire of the Twilight saga.
