Children with learning difficultiesDo you know anyone who suffers from learning difficulties? There are several disabilities out there, so chances are you know someone who struggles with everyday problems. But are learning disabilities really a nuisance? In most cases, this can be considered a misunderstanding. Learning disabilities (LD) affect how a person "of at least average intelligence receives, stores, and processes information" (NCLD 2001). This neurological disorder especially prevents children from performing well academically. Therefore more time and special programs are dedicated to them. Once one is informed about what disability means, the causes of LD, what programs are available to overcome learning difficulties, and parents learn ways to help their child at home, learning disability is no longer considered a annoying, but instead a battle to win. As common as learning disabilities may be, not all children in America are affected, however, the number may be greater than you think. In 2001, more than 2.9 million children were diagnosed with a learning disability. The number is not accurate as some definitions of learning disabilities are different from others. (NCLD 2001) Some of the most common are dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. Typically, those with learning disabilities have difficulty writing, reading, speaking, listening, and doing mathematics (NCLD 2001). They may also have short-term memory loss and will often let their emotions override their reasoning. They may have difficulty paying attention in class and find ways to avoid work, especially when they find the material too difficult.
