Topic > Gender and Sexuality Issues - 1244

In the book Gender and Sexuality Issues by K. Lee Lerner (2006), he discusses many different types of gender issues that many people face, particularly in the United States. The book focuses on different aspects of gender issues such as women's rights and femininity versus masculinity; discusses sexual orientation issues such as gay rights and transgender people; and finally, this book is about sexual crimes and how to prevent them. The author not only discusses each topic, but also provides examples of real-life problems or situations, which allow the reader to better understand or understand the specific topic. The author uses articles from several authors to consolidate his points and to provide readers with examples and scenarios where these issues have been seen before. One chapter in particular that has emerged is that of gender and sexuality as described or represented in the media, and this is one of the chapters I will focus on. The other is femininity versus masculinity. The first chapter I will evaluate is how sex is used in the media and how it has changed over the last fifty years, and this is mostly seen in cinema and television, as well as in advertisements. Sex is a much discussed topic in today's culture, it surrounds us and is present in our daily lives; “from the use of supermodels to innuendo, sexual and sensual imagery is a staple of commercials and print advertising” (Lerner, 2006, p. 353). The most common use of sexuality in the media is the portrayal of women. Once upon a time, women were seen as mothers and wives, always at home preparing dinner and looking after the children while the male figure was at work. Today, this is very different. Women are used as a sex symbol... in the center of the card... I think with so many examples it's hard to narrow down a topic enough to understand. On the other hand, it is also good to have examples because it allows the reader to understand better and provides examples where people have had certain ideas about a topic and how their opinion might be different. But having so many examples and articles from other authors, it seems excessive and I had a lot of trouble understanding what some articles were trying to convey. Overall, I think this book is a great source for those who would like to know more about the various gender and sexual problems in our society and the different ways to prevent these problems from becoming more common in our society. This book was an interesting and very educational read, I learned a lot and know I could use this information in the future.
