Nowadays, the only cigarette ads you see on TV are the ones that show someone how deadly they can be, as shown in figure 2. Believe it or not , in the 1930s, if you smoked cigarettes, they were beautiful and glamorous. Women were sexy and independent when they had a cigarette between their lips. Now, however, if you see a woman smoking, you see that she has a disgusting habit. The reality of smoking, seen in Figure 2, is that a cigarette does not make a woman attractive. Smoking is no longer cool or trendy and once smoking was banned in some areas, people lost interest. Smoking is something that strips a person of all their beauty leaving them to rot inside and out. The first advertisement shown in Figure 1 was created in 1929 and promotes Lucky Strike cigarettes using a beautiful, young woman. She is shown as very healthy with a slim figure, but as you can see she casts an obese looking shadow. Lucy Strike is known for her advertisements based on the beauty of women and in this she wants to symbolize that smoking makes you skinny. They exploited women's insecurities to feel part of the masses. In old movies you usually see everyone with a cigarette in their hand, no matter where they are: school, work, cinema, hospitals and even on planes. This was their reality in those times. Once upon a time, people smoked wherever they wanted, but now it is almost impossible to do so. Advertisements like the one in Figure 1 were everywhere, but then people began to realize that smoking cigarettes wasn't any good for you. Cigarettes not only affected smokers' appearance, but were also a major cause of cancer. So the company replaced these advertisements with the ones shown in Figure 2.
