The Consequences of Totalitarianism Winston and Julia in George Orwell's 1984 are characters who live in a context of complete control. Life in Oceania is characterized by complete and utter destruction by an entity known as Big Brother. This entity exerts its control by brainwashing the population of Oceania into believing what it wants them to believe. Winston and Julia live in a sphere of solitude until they suspect that there is another human being who hates Big Brother, which is, literally, why they band together. This partnership gives them hope to fight Big Brother. The reality is that a totalitarian government leaves little room for hope or individuality. Orwell's purpose is to show the destructive effects of totalitarianism. Human responsibility is non-existent in a world where totalitarian rule is infinite (“1984” 240). An example of visualization is given to Winston when he and Julia are subjected to torture: “O'Brien gives Winston an image of the future: a boot trampling on a human face, forever and ever” (“1984” 240). Dictation consistently triumphs, and multiple beings are innocently defeated without any explanation as to why (“1984” 242). An overly cruel government brutalizes anyone with a desire to remain righteous (Stewart). Through it all, Winston maintains perseverance and faces severe pain while ignoring the pain (Rae). Orwell created a horrific scenario in which a citizen like Winston, who rebels, is driven out. The narrator resists authoritarian forces and takes part in something that is banned by the Party: he keeps a personal book (Burt). Winston longs for the possibility of being unique, of having his own ability to reason, of having an intimate space to use; these desires are all outlawed by authoritative leaders such as the Party and Big Brother. Authorities have imposed environmental restrictions and citizens lack a place to be themselves (Glover). The narrator persists in refusing to take part in the monstrous Big Brother. All in all, after the betrayal emerges, Winston becomes loyal to authority figures
