Topic > Health Disparities in Sexual Orientation - 1744

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, an acronym for LGBT, span all races and ethnicities, religions and social classes around the world. We know that this community faces many health disparities, such as lack of access to needed services related to their sexual orientation or gender identity; however, a gap in health data exists regarding the number of LGBT individuals and their health needs. This is because sexual orientation and gender identity are not asked frequently in state or national surveys and especially because many people do not openly express their true sexual orientation. Health disparities refer to inequities in access to and quality of health care experienced by minority groups, including racial and ethnic minorities, low-income individuals and families, sexual minorities, and immigrant communities. Now many LGBT people feel that “coming out” is dangerous, and even by reaching out to healthcare providers, they feel that they will be personally judged and not receive good healthcare. LGBT people face discrimination on a daily basis, and this oppression contributes to health disparities. The health of the LGBT community requires specific healthcare attention because LGBT individuals are at greater risk than their heterosexual peers for many diseases and other conditions. These poor outcomes are the result of differences in access to healthcare... middle of paper ......knowledge of their specific healthcare needs. They can also implement medical education courses on LGBT issues in the healthcare sector. However, all of these ideas are just simply the beginning, with the new data on minority group numbers, we can measure how much the federal government can fund for specialized education and/or medical needs. Training staff and medical students is also important to help create any facility, whether it is a hospital or small clinic, to become an LGBT-friendly environment. This helps reduce the need for specialized facilities for the LGBT community because hospitals that deny people care because of their orientation will decrease. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community health requires health care providers to understand, conceptualize, and develop plans to help the LGBT community. needs of LGBT individuals and communities.
