You always need someone or something to blame. Unfortunately, sometimes blame gets placed in the wrong place. After many tragic events, including teenage violence, a nationwide search for an explanation began. Very quickly people thought that video games were the reason. All of the killers in the Columbine High School massacre and the Colorado movie theater shooting played violent video games (Carey, 1). All the suspects were under the age of twenty-five. The public response was immediate. Hillary Clinton introduced a bill, seeking to ban the marketing of violent video games to minors, making it illegal for minors to purchase games rated "Mature" or "Adults Only." Many people think that these games caused these men to go on a rampage, but there is a side to video games that the public doesn't know. What parents and people like Hillary Clinton need to do is understand the statistics behind these games before making the judgment to ban these violent games. The link between video games and mass shootings and violence in general is actually incredibly insignificant. The effect of video games on encouraging teenage violence is almost non-existent and, contrary to popular belief, has had a positive effect on most young adults. Even if public opinion is still convinced that violent video games only have negative effects on minors, this statement is increasingly contradicted by statistical data. With new research clearly showing the positives of video games, it's clear that these games should never be restricted or banned. One of the main reasons supporting the positive effect of video games is the actual number of violent youth in America, which is decreasing. Maybe it's true that there are masses of them... in the middle of paper... while video game sales have quadrupled in the same period” (ProCon.org, 3). There has been much debate about the effects of media violence on real-world behavior, especially regarding violent video games. Fortunately, new data has shown that these games significantly reduce the amount of violence among teenagers across America, despite record video game sales. Other studies clearly show how video games increased visual and literary skills, as well as improved problem solving. The public needs to know, and Hillary Clinton needs to know. There aren't enough legitimate reasons that can overturn all the positive aspects of these games. Whether it's the argument that video games decrease crime, or that their ban violates constitutional rights, all of these factors contribute to the ultimate message: Video games should not be banned in the United States..
