The seed of the hostile environment begins with the education system. Youth of color have been disproportionately subjected to harsh school discipline, leading to incarceration. Racial discrimination in the criminal justice system leads to long prison sentences and the loss of basic civil rights. Young people of color are three and a half times more likely to be suspended. 39% of all expulsions in 2009-2010 were among youth of color, representing only 18% of enrollment (“Disparities in School Discipline Move Students of Color Toward Prison” article by Rachel Wilf). Based on these data, black students are more ready, after suspensions and expulsions, to take the first step towards prison. The education system creates a hostile environment for young people of color, which pushes them to commit crimes. By racially profiling children based on their color, law enforcement and school security guards ruin a life just beginning. How can anyone want to succeed in our society if the hoops they have to jump through are constant? Young people of color must always be 100% aware of everything that is happening around them and never dare to speak out or take a stand. If they take a stand they are called racists, if they do so the racists will find them and put them in jail anyway. So instead of educating children of color, we send them to prison as soon as possible. Mistreating
