In June 1985, British mountaineers Joe Simpson and Simon Yates ventured up the unclimbed west face of Siula Grande, a 21,000-foot peak located in the Peruvian Andes. Simpson and Yates were both aware that what they aspired to is almost impossible because if something went wrong it could be serious, which could lead to death, and there is no rescue available; furthermore, climbers before them who attempted to reach the mountain's summit never achieved this goal. However, this did not prevent them from climbing the west face of Siula Grande. They want to climb the mountain mostly because “it was just fun.” (2009). When people are aware that they are in a harmful situation, they continue to do what they want anyway. In my opinion, I believe that people behave this way simply because they want to feel something extraordinary or they want to prove something to someone; but in psychology people behave this way because of motivation. Motivation is defined as the process “that drives a person to move towards a goal”. (SparkNotes Editors, 2005); a motivation can be intrinsic, extrinsic, or both. Intrinsic motivation is a type of motivation that causes an individual to act or engage in activities to improve their self-concept, while extrinsic motivation is a type of motivation that causes an individual to act in this way to gain external recognition. In the case of Simpson and Yates, they both experience intrinsic and extrinsic motivation; despite putting themselves in danger, they still want to reach the top of the mountain because of the interest, fun, and rewards. Additionally, Simpson and Yates met a complete stranger named Richard Hawking who is from Lima; Hawking is... middle of paper... hungry because the hormone insulin allows cells to put glucose into the blood; when the pancreas discharges the insulin hunger will increase. When Yates was at base camp, Hawking was overly concerned about Yates' condition; he was concerned that Yates might be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a psychiatric disorder that can occur after suffering or witnessing a traumatic event. Having good social support like Hawking's is crucial to helping protect Yates from PTSD. As Simpson was struggling to get down the mountain, he experienced hallucinations and intense anxiety. Was experiencing panic disorder, an individual with panic disorder experiences unexpected panic attacks, which cause worry or anxiety. During this disorder, an individual may experience heart palpitations, sweating, dizziness, fear of losing control, going crazy, and dying..
