Topic > The federal government should NOT regulate fast food...

After Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation was published in 2001 and became a New York Times bestseller, the film of the same title and other documentary films related to food such as “Super Tagliami” (2004) and “Food Inc.” (2009) have become major hits, which may reflect people's increased awareness of healthy food over the past decade. However, the recent article from the online magazine Time shows that today's food situation does not seem to have improved since then, and has actually gotten worse. Especially a social problem such as the relationship between childhood obesity and fast food attracts more and more people's attention and it is believed that some laws are needed by the federal government to prevent the situation from worsening (Melnick). The federal government should do something about this problem, but it does not need to get involved in legislation about the fast food industry. Federal government policies are quite good because they always strongly influence the private sectors directly or indirectly. . The way the government gets involved in the fast food industry can be seen in its recent policy actions, for example, in school meals to solve the problem of childhood obesity. In December 2010, President Obama signed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act to authorize funding for federal school meals and child nutrition programs and to increase access to healthy food for low-income children with an increased budget of $10 billion over the next 10 years (Office of Press Secretary). The budget will eventually flush suppliers who can provide healthy food. All food manufacturers and retailers will try to provide new meals that meet the requirements of the new policies, which will happen without any regulation directed against the food industry.
