Log 4The film Shaw Shank Redemption shows the processes and costs of institutionalism. The film follows the lives of prisoners in Shaw Shank Prison. The prison is run by the corrupt warden Norton and his guard captain Byron Hadley. Norton is involved in corruption, money laundering, and Hadley abuses inmates. The film is narrated by Ellis "Red" Redding and is about his friend Andy Dufrense. Andy, an investment banker was convicted of double murder for the deaths of his wife and her lover. The film follows his struggle for survival in prison where he faces rape and exploitation, until he escapes back into the outside world. An important theme in this The first idea that interested me was the idea of institutionalism. This theme is shown through the character of the streams. Brooks is a seventy-year-old convict who has spent the last fifty years of his life in prison, who threatens to kill his friend to stay in prison. Brooks and for these fifty years he has known nothing other than to be the prison librarian. Brooks shouts "it's the only way they'll let me stay." Brooks had been released on parole but had become so accustomed to prison life that he calls prison his home so when he is finally released, he doesn't know how to react. His attempted murder of a cellmate is an act of fear so that he does not have to leave behind the only life he knows. After being released, he hangs himself in a rehabilitation home for prisoners after finding life on the outside lonely and meaningless. In prison, Brooks was the head librarian and was a respected man, but on the outside he was just another old ex-con. This idea makes me think about the difficulties long-term prisoners face after being released and whether enough is being done to help them reintegrate. This character is... middle of paper... came from those projects by linking him to different accounts. Warden Norton is corrupt as his interests are in his own gain rather than the rehabilitation of the inmates. This idea of corruption is politically valuable since the director represents many politicians whose interest is in lining their pockets rather than helping the people. These people have a responsibility to lead and help, but they abuse their power for their own financial gain. The Warden is not only using Andy to steal money, but also uses his guards (particularly Hadley) to cruelly beat his prisoners and has Tommy killed to protect his reputation. Instead of using the prison as a place to enforce the law, the Warden uses the prison to further his own power. It shows how they don't care about prisoners, socially valuable like the government in Egypt where they don't care about people just for their own gain.
