The weather, the news, the morning commute, the stock market, everything changes daily, but people don't get all flustered by them when compared to changes in politics, in national affairs, culture and society that become overwhelming and shocking to people. The overwhelming transformations that people cannot stop are believed to have a negative effect on their way of life. People are so satisfied with the way they live that they don't want this adjustment to happen, even if it comes sooner or later. In the three essays by Maxine Hong Kingston, Cornell West, and Kofi Annan, there is a positive and negative change that is projected throughout the writing. Cultures are seen as the behaviors and beliefs of ethnic or age social groups, these change over time and the people involved in the change can become stubborn and fearful. Kingston's "No Name Woman" illustrates how a shift in culture can cause a mother to tell an extreme story so her daughter doesn't bring embarrassment to their family. The conclusion of such an extreme story as “What happened to her could happen to you” brings serious concerns about changes in a girl who has started menstruating. An affair could cripple a family name and this was how her mother could change her daughter's way of thinking. In Chinese culture, when crops don't grow or there is no work for people, the excuse is used that the spirits are angry with them. They used their aunt as a scapegoat "She cursed the year, the family, the village and herself" when their village was hit by bad harvests and no jobs. The culture of this Chinese village forced a young woman to take her own life and that of her son because she was accused of their misfortune. The d… middle of the paper… why there should be some conflict over something no one can truly feel. Annan believes that change is necessary for the world to work together and for different heritages and faiths to live side by side. There are many things in the world that need to change to make this place better for everyone, but it doesn't start with countries or religions, it starts with a single person. Change will happen for better or for worse, people cannot stop change, this is why in some cases it has such a drastic effect on their life. People will be overwhelmed and petrified by these changes, but in the long run it will all work out. These changes are necessary for our cultures, our society and our way of life to survive in today's world. Once people can grasp the nature of change and begin to understand its meaning, they will be able to relax and go with the flow of life..
