In social work practice, social workers should abide by and respect the protocol of their particular organization. The first ethical standard I would like to discuss is that of the social worker with cultural and social competence (NASW, 1999). A social worker must possess knowledge of values, customs, tradition, and history, to name a few, to be successful with clients who may identify with something other than their own identity. Culture directly influences human behavior. Within this case study, due to Mrs. Sanchez's culture, she struggled to assimilate into American culture and this included her ability to learn the English language. Her culture was very important to her and I respect it. As a social worker, I respect the Sanchez family's decisions, after all they have the right to make their own choices when it comes to services. As suggested by Deci and Ryan (2012), all human beings desire to be competent and have a sense of control over their situation. In this family, Mr. Sanchez makes most of the decisions and as a social worker it is important that I accept this because he knows what is best for his family. The members of the Sanchez family have goals that they would like to achieve and as a social worker it is my job to guide them in achieving their goals by allowing them to have total control of their interests. In this family, I cannot ignore the fact that Mr. Sanchez is working hard to provide for his family. Not only does he have to work, but he wants to work and I can't make him do otherwise. Reading Mr. Sanchez's online description, I can honestly say that I am concerned about his physical and mental health, but I cannot tell Mr. Sanchez to stop working because that would constitute a violation of the client's capacity for self-determination. As a social worker, however, I can warn him of the possible risks and encourage him to visit the doctor, but I cannot tell him to work as hard as he can. As a social worker I have the responsibility to guide Mr. Sanchez and provide him with alternatives and options, but ultimately the decision is his.
