An analysis of the article by Denise Rousseau and David Guest Denise Rousseau took a descriptive approach to explain the psychological contract while David Guest was more analytical about the term “psychological contract”. David provided a more detailed and in-depth analysis of the psychological contract. He was also able to delve into Rousseau's analysis of the psychological contract in more detail. According to Rousseau (2004), “psychological contracts are beliefs, based on expressed or implicit promises, regarding an exchange agreement between an individual and, in organizations, the employing company and its agents”. Rousseau, went further to detail the six characteristics of the psychological contract, which include voluntary choice, trust in mutual agreement, incompleteness, multiple contacts, management of losses in case of contract failure, the contract as model for working relationships. He also listed the types of psychological contracts and these include relational, transactional, and hybrid or balanced psychological contract. Finally, it provided guidelines on how managers can manage the psychological contract. On the other hand, David Guest (1998) opted for a more critical analysis of the psychological contract. However, he agrees with Rousseau that the psychological contract seems to provide a useful concept in dealing with organizations, but questions the content and elements of the psychological contract provided by other authors, including Rousseau. However, I am more intrigued by his skepticism regarding the term “contract” in psychological contract, which he coined as a legal metaphor. In his article he states that “a contract reciprocally implies, an agreement or at least the outward appearance of an agreement”. ...... half of the document ...... Complete database.
