Before our heroine's journey can begin, she learned martial arts from her mentor Pai Mai. Pai Mei is a legendary martial arts master. Pai Mei relentlessly ridiculed Beatrix for being a Caucasian American woman and also for not being able to use chopsticks. Once he earned her respect, he taught her numerous martial art techniques, including: punching through thick panels, close-ups, and the five-point palm exploding heart technique. This technique is one that Pai Mei had not taught to any other student in his time. Now, knowing this, the hero's journey can begin. Kill Bill begins with our hero, Beatrix Kiddo, attending her wedding rehearsal in El Paso, Texas. Prior to this, Beatrix was part of an assassin group, known as the Deadly Viper Assassin Squad (DVAS), consisting of six members. These five members belong to the elite and are among the deadliest assassins: the protagonist Bill (The Snake Charmer), Beatrix Kiddo (Black Mamba), O-Ren Ishii (Cottonmouth), Vernita Green (Copperhead), Elle Driver ( California Mountain Snake), and Budd (Sidewinder). Kiddo left DVAS to start life over and have a child. While in the small chapel in El Paso, Bill arrives with the DVAS and carries out a total massacre on everyone residing inside the chapel, they even kill the pianist. At the end of the massacre the assassination squad circles Beatrix and fires a bullet into her head, thinking she will be killed. This is where our heroine's journey begins. After being shot in the head by her fellow ex-assassins, she is unable to take her sweet, sweet revenge on them all as she is in a coma. This is Beatrix Kiddo's rejection of the call. While in a coma, one-eyed Elle Driver is sent to put an end to Black Mamba, but she is... middle of paper... how they took two of the group's members. DVAS leaves three remaining. Bill warns his brother Budd or Sidewinder that he will be Beatrix's next target. Knowing this he prepares for his arrival. Beatrix explores the area on a rocky mountain overlooking Budd's trailer in the middle of the desert. Beatrix then slides out from under her trailer. Trying to ambush him, he bursts through the trailer door and holds a rock salt-black double-barreled shotgun to his chest. After this Budd calls old DVAS member Elle Driver to sell Beatrix's Hattori Hanzo sword for one million dollars. He later seals Beatrix in a coffin and buries her alive. To escape this inevitable death he will have to use the technique learned in the Pai Mei temple. Beatrix, after punching the top of the coffin numerous times, finally manages to break through and escape death and pass one of her tests.
