Model Minority Theory is a concept that places in people's minds the assumption that all people who are from Asia or with Asian ancestry are successful , they are intelligent, they are tenacious to work and they are model citizens who respect the authority of their country. The model minority theory became very evident in 1966, when two major magazines published articles praising the great achievements of Asian Americans (Fong 62). While the theory may seem to praise Asians for their hard work and success, it actually makes a difference. the exact opposite in that it hides and marginalizes the real experiences Asian Americans face. For example, one of the ways that model minority theory harms the Asian American community is that it hides the fact that there are many Asian Americans living below or on the poverty line (Fong 62). When it comes to academics, it hides the fact that many Asian American students struggle in school and don't get the help they need. It is also bad because it overlooks the years of oppression that Asian Americans face when they first arrive in the United States. Finally, it creates a lot of racial tension between them and other ethnic groups (Fong 62.). With this I feel that we should work to get rid of the model minority theory, as it would improve the lives of all Asian Americans because it would reveal the large number of Asians who are overlooked by the theory. The model minority theory may have formed based on the post-1965 Asian immigrants who came to the United States. Many of these immigrants were well educated, spoke English, and held white-collar jobs. It may also have been formed from Confucianism and its cultural values ​​of always working hard and respecting authority (Chou 221.) By educating others about the true realities of Asian-American life, Asian students may finally not receive additional pressure from their teachers to also be at the top of their class. One of the saddest things I feel the theory does is that it completely takes away an Asian person's individuality and instead makes people look at them as a collection of people. It is very important to educate the public about this Minor Model theory because many of them may follow it without even knowing it. I have a feeling that if the public were educated on the theory, they would see how much harm it does to Asian Americans and begin to remove some of the stereotypes they think of when they see an Asian. With the model minority theory being rejected, Asian Americans can finally start getting the help they need and the accreditation they need.
