Topic > A Doll's House, by Henrik Ibsen - 1548

The themes of “objectivity” and “female liberation” in Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House conveyed through the characterization of Torvald and Nora, diction, captions, and two-part structure integral scene.A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen tells the story of a wife's struggle to break away from the social norms of the European middle class of the late 19th century. Throughout the play, Ibsen focuses on the characterization and experiences of Nora and therefore this leads the reader to perceive her as the protagonist. On the other hand, her husband, Helmer, also called Torvald, is revealed as the antagonist as the dialogue between him and Nora throughout the entire play portrays him as an authoritative figure and an oppressor rather than a loving and supportive husband. By comparing and contrasting the opening scene of Act One, pages 147 to 149, and the closing scene of Act Three, pages 225 to 227, I understood and appreciated the changes in thematic ideas focusing primarily on the writing style, diction, and structure. The theme of objecthood is effectively represented in the opening scene through the use of diction applied in the dialogue between Nora Helmer and Torvald Helmer and is further reinforced by the tone of voice of both characters. The opening scene focuses solely on introducing both characters allowing the readers a full insight into the characters' usual day-to-day interactions and this further enhances the reader's understanding of the characters' attitudes and opinions on things. The argument scene, on the other hand, serves as a climax and turning point as both Torvald and Nora come to the point of realization. The theme of women's liberation is effectively conveyed through this scene, once again, through... the middle of the paper... Torvald and also the changes that have occurred in their marriage and the reasons behind them. Analyzing the diction in both scenes, we realize a clear change in ideas and tone of voice. These changes allowed us to better understand the general plot of the work. The theme of objecthood shifts towards female liberation as we examine both scenes, through diction, tone of voice and captions. Also as a result of the thematic shifts, we become aware of the shift in power between Nora and Torvald which enhances our understanding of the theme of women's liberation. The depiction of a young wife's struggle to break free from the norms of society is actually well depicted in these two full scenes. From his treatment as an object to his liberation; the diction, tone of voice, captions and structure allowed us to better understand this aspect.
