Topic > Whispers in the Dark: Ch. 1: Sneaking Shadows

There are things in this world that are best left unsaid. There are secrets that should remain untold. Things hide in the darkness around you. They hide in the shadows and wait for their prey. You are not safe. No one is ever safe. Be very careful. They may be watching you right now…RIGHT NOW! Catalina woke up with the old man's words still echoing in her head. Late last night, Catalina's friend, whose name was Alec, dragged her to an old man's house. The old man was known as The Keeper, but no one knew his real name. She always told strange stories to kids who passed by like her and Alec. Catalina had always thought The Caretaker was creepy. He was right. The Warden was the creepiest man Catalina had ever met. Which in his village already said a lot. Catalina looked around the silent room. It was still dark due to the cloudy sky. It was like London in his village, always cloudy. Catalina rubbed her eyes and slid out of bed. Her feet gently grazed the cold, hard wooden floor that sent shivers down her spine. Catalina was a beautiful, very skinny fourteen year old girl. Her soft, bouncy hair was long; it reached her hips. His eyes were dark brown like the wood of an oak and his hair was silver-blond. She was tall for her age, but still short in the eyes of others and Catalina was fine with that. Catalina quickly changed from pajamas to school uniform. It was a simple uniform with a black skirt, a white button-down shirt, a black tweed jacket, and a silver and blue striped tie. Catalina hated wearing the uniform almost as much as she hated her school. Catalina let out an exasperated sigh and continued getting ready. S... in the middle of the paper... it's probably the oldest thing in the village. It was completely made of wood and looked like it could fall apart at any moment. The windows were boarded up and the house itself looked generally creepy. Catalina knew she should turn around and go to school. Honestly, that house wasn't his business. Yet, she seemed to hear voices. They were weak, but they were there. Catalina found her feet carrying her to the barred windows. The voices got louder as he got closer. Out of curiosity, he pressed his ear against the boards. "Sir, there was a mortal with us!" That was Alec's distinct voice. Mortal? What was he talking about? "Yes I know!" That was the Warden's gruff, Scottish voice. “The girl deserved a fair warning.” he said grumpily. “I don't mean to interrupt,” said a curt voice, cold and smooth as silk. "but we are being watched."
