The people, especially in this period, attempted to represent themselves, outside the confines of Parliament and the king. Subsequently, the divide between America and England worsened. The Sons of Liberty rose up in opposition to the fiscal crisis felt in America. The Sons of Liberty used the terms liberty, slavery, and freedom to further motivate followers. “For this denial and execution of that law implies our slavery and would weaken the basis of our freedom.” Once again the Sons reiterated that it is wrong to impose taxes on the people without their consent. Britain, still reeling from its massive debt, incurred further taxation attempts, the Tea Act, in order to force profits from the popular drink. American shipowners boycotted the transport of tea to Great Britain. The resistance was organized by the Sons of Liberty; their ability to unite against Parliament only made Britain's attempts to control colonial America more difficult. British ships were chartered to counter the American boycott, and the Sons of Liberty responded, "If they can sell that tea, we will have no property to call our own, and so we can say good-bye to American Liberty. Such support led to the opposition known as Boston Tea Party, a colonialist party that disposed of hundreds of chests of tea in Boston Harbor, resulting in massive loss of profits for the East India Company.
