Topic > The Struggles of John Proctor - 1073

All of us have gone through some kinds of problems and difficulties in our lives. No matter what age we were or what task we were supposed to perform, we could all say that we have been there and done that. For example, these issues might include defending personal beliefs or even living by them. During these struggles we may have had to make some challenging choices or sacrifices to overcome these conflicts. It is a normal thing in life to go through these kinds of tribulations. During the Salem witchcraft trials, a specific character in The Crucible went through similar, terrifying experiences. The Salem witchcraft trials occurred when people were hanged and punished after being falsely accused of witchcraft. These times were very unpleasant for the Puritans. There wasn't much anyone could do to try to stop the chaos. If anyone had intervened, he would most likely have been hanged himself for witchcraft. The character who went through these conflicts was called John Proctor. John has a wife, three children and was well respected with his name full of integrity and honor. As a Puritan you had to follow the Ten Commandments exactly and respect Puritan beliefs. John later sees that he must force himself to make difficult decisions. In other words, John is struggling between the choice of protecting his reputation or living by his personal beliefs. In the end, all of John's decisions and actions contribute greatly to the theme and teach the reader a valuable and important lesson. In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, John Proctor struggles with his personal beliefs and principles. In the third act, John Proctor struggles between choosing what is right to do or protecting his reputation. John works with maki... middle of paper... confessing to adultery or tearing up the written confession were the right actions to take. John was able to see that he had become a better person when he saw that he was true to what he believed; he was still good even if he made a mistake. The reader will be able to learn a very valuable and useful lesson from John's actions in this play. He was able to show us that we are not all perfect and that sometimes we will make mistakes and have flaws. This contributes to the theme that we will come across difficult situations and may make some mistakes along the way, but that's just what makes us human. Like John Proctor, there will come times in our lives when we will have to make drastic decisions. We can learn from mistakes and mistakes made in the past to make better choices in the future. This is what makes us humans perfectly imperfect.
