DescriptionDescribe what you are recording about. Identify whether it was a newspaper article or a book chapter; practical observation; theory taught; conference or otherwise. I was reading a book called "We Too Were Baptized" written by Marilyn Alexander and James Preston. The book addresses the question 'What does it mean to be Christian and gay?' Understanding What was the main message? What I understood was said by the author; teacher; practitioner etc... What argument was used to support their position? The message of the book is that when we are baptized Christians and we are welcomed into the church as children of God. At the moment of baptism the church and parishioners promise throughout the rite to accept, love, forgive and cultivate the person in the faith. However, the church can be selective and if a person identifies as gay or lesbian the church condemns them and makes them believe that they are not children of God. “Oppression is not only evil, it is blasphemous because it makes a child of God doubt that he/she is a child of God” Archbishop Desmond Tutu, quoted in Alexander & Preston 1992: P43Because due to fear and isolation from the church and their community gay and lesbian people can oppress their feelings and sexuality, deny who they really are in order to live a life that is accepted by the church and society, marrying someone of the opposite sex and starting a family. “Fear and repression of sexuality in general fuel the fire of homophobia. Inner tension is avoidance, regret and denial. The walls go up; the sentinel is on the alert” (Alexander & Preston. 1992: P55) Critical thinking What is my assessment of what was presented/observed? What evidence do I have that supports or contradicts the above? (Re...... half of the document ...... like LGB&T. Are faith-based youth clubs really doing youth work that should be inclusive for all, or are they doing activities with young people while teaching theological literature and scriptures? If faith-based youth workers are the pastors of their church, are they protecting the entire flock or just a select few, isolating those who are different?
