The park was home to animals such as deer, grizzly bears and 120 other animals. Now, the Henry Doorly Zoo is home to over 17,000 animals and 962 different species. However, the presence of all these different animals in the zoo disrupts the animals' native ecology. Even under the best circumstances, in the best zoos, a zoo cannot begin to replicate wild animal habitat. While a wild animal is free to roam and explore the world, in a zoo it is confined to a small area. Additionally, zoos say they want to protect species from extinction, but zoos usually only want animals because they are exotic or popular. These exotic animals are placed in an unnatural environment and disrupt their native ecology. A zoo wants these exotic animals primarily for the purpose of promoting tourism and generating money. Zoos say they want to protect species from extinction, which on the surface sounds good, but in reality they just want to attract crowds and publicity. Zoos also say they are helping to repopulate an endangered or exotic species, but the animals in the zoo will never return to the wild. Animals in nature must survive on a daily basis. They need to hunt or gather food and avoid predators. Animals in zoos never experience any of this and would not survive
