In many cases, men were declared superior to women. St. Paul states in 1 Timothy 2:12, “I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, she must be silent.” There are many verses in the Bible that humiliate women. Jesus spread uplifting and positive messages of equality and mutual love, yet the culture of the time did not perceive women equally. Even during the service women were not allowed to speak. We know this from 1 Corinthians 14:34-35, “women should remain silent during the meeting. They are not allowed to speak. Instead, we must keep them under control just as the law says. If they want to learn something, they should ask their husbands at home. It is shameful for a woman to speak during the assembly." This passage lets us know that religious education and practice for women occurs through their husbands. The husband had complete control over the family. If women were not allowed to speak during service, they most likely had to remain silent during the day unless spoken to. The word spoken in that passage perfectly contradicts the teachings of Jesus Christ. Luke 8:1-3 tells the story of Jesus traveling through towns and villages preaching the word of God. Along with Jesus were the twelve disciples and many different women who had been healed of sickness and disease. Among the women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna wife of Cusa, Susanna and many others. The fact that Jesus had so many female followers was a statement of equality to him. It was to show equal love for each other. The word of God also describes sexual practice between husband and wife. One of the many problems of the time was female prostitution. Prostitution was condemned both by society and from a religious point of view. 1 Corinthians 7:7 says, “A man should satisfy the sexual needs of his wife, and the wife should do the same for her husband.” This shows that sexual needs must be met by the spouse.
