The issue between Palestine and IsraelFor decades, the people of Palestine and Israel have been in conflict with each other. The cause of the conflict was due to religion, territory and borders (infoplease.com). The conflict began when Israel officially became a state in 1948. In the same year, the political issues of Jewish immigration to Palestine became an issue during World War I (White, 200). The matter had worsened when the British became heavily involved and decided to negotiate with the Arabs in the early 20th century. Unfortunately for both groups, the British had managed to gain control of some parts of the Middle East with their influence through the Mandate of Palestine (White, 201). The Balfour Declaration of November 1917 was created as a promise to the Jews that they would have a homeland of their own (White, 200). The negotiations were intended to satisfy both the Palestinian Arabs and the Palestinian Jews, but instead the opposite occurred (White, 201). The Palestinian people wanted to get out of British control. Both groups felt that their religion and territory were threatened. A riot began with both groups; which then led to the reemergence of modern terrorism (White, 201). This, in turn, led to hatred and mistrust between the Jewish and Arab communities (White, 201). The British could not control their anger and asked the United Nations for help. Furthermore, the British were told that part of the country would be given to the Arabs and the other part to the Jews with the help of the UN General Assembly resolution. 181. United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181 was one of the most significant milestones in the history of the struggles between the two countries. It was a basic use… middle of paper… it was considered more of a threat to the United States and other possible countries at odds with the Palestinian people than with the Israeli people. There was also strong hope for regional stability and peace in Israel (“History of Palestine”). The United States was to support their cause publicly, but work privately to maintain the peace (White, 204). Peace ensures good economic relations between both Israelis and clients of the West (White, 204). Work Cited Infoplease. Infoplease, n.d. Web. April 22, 2014. White, Jonathan Randall.
