Coming from a family with a rich culinary tradition, I have been exposed to a wide variety of traditional dishes and culinary practices. My cultural upbringing instilled in me a deep appreciation for home-cooked meals and the importance of sharing food as a means of strengthening family bonds. According to research conducted by Arredondo et al. (2017), cultural influences play a crucial role in shaping individuals' eating habits, as they determine the types of foods consumed, mealtime practices, and dietary preferences. Growing up in a family that prioritized traditional cuisine, I developed a preference for homemade meals over fast food or processed snacks. This cultural influence has significantly influenced my food choices, leading me to prioritize fresh, whole foods in my daily meals. Social Experiences In addition to cultural influences, my eating habits have also been shaped by various social experiences throughout my life. As a college student, I was exposed to different social contexts that influenced my food choices and mealtime behaviors. For example, eating out with friends at fast food restaurants or ordering takeout has become a common practice among my peers, which often leads to the consumption of unhealthy, calorie-dense foods. Research conducted by El Ansari and Stock (2014) supports the idea that social influences, such as peer pressure and social norms, can have a significant impact on individuals' eating habits. The study found that college students are particularly sensitive to social influences when it comes to food choices, often opting for convenience and taste over nutritional value. Reflecting on my experiences, I can attest to the impact of social factors on my eating habits, as I found myself succumbing to peer pressure and indulging in unhealthy eating behaviors in social settings. Personal preferences Despite the influence of cultural and social factors, my eating habits are also shaped by my personal preferences and individual choices. Over the years I have developed a keen interest in nutrition and healthy eating, leading me to make informed decisions about the foods I consume. As a result, I've incorporated a variety of nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into my diet, with the goal of maintaining a balanced and healthy approach to nutrition. According to a study by Satia-Abouta et al. al. (2018), personal preferences and individual attitudes towards food play a significant role in determining dietary patterns and eating behaviors. The study highlights the importance of self-motivation and personal agency in making choices.
