Topic > My Social Media and Marketing Internship Experience

This fall I was fortunate enough to intern at the Career Development Center as a Social Media and Marketing Intern. I have so much to reflect on from my time there; I have grown as an individual during this opportunity. Learning how to advertise and market the Career Development Center for Career Counselors has helped dramatically improve my marketing skills. Going into this internship, I had no idea what steps needed to be taken to publicize such an essential resource on campus. Say no to plagiarism. I overcame this frustration by freeing my mind and looking at things through a more different creative lens. I began looking at the social media accounts of Career Develop Centers at different universities which allowed me to see ways to improve all of Purchase CDC's social media accounts. It would be really overwhelming at times because it was so full of content to look at, but it was fascinating to see how these other Professional Development Centers captured the attention of their audiences. Before getting this internship, I never realized how much attention to detail is needed to ensure the message you're creating gets through to your target audience. The Career Development Center's target audience is Purchase College undergraduate students. Every post published on social media sites had to be appealing to students. The ability to put myself in the shoes of the target audience to imagine how he or she might perceive a social media post was interesting and equally inspiring. It allowed me to think carefully about all the posts to make sure they were interesting to the students who were viewing them. I believe that the skills acquired during this internship can help me in the future. Now I can manage multiple social media outlets and publish engaging posts to a large audience. Many jobs will capitalize on this skill due to our social media dominated age. The entire Career Development Center team is very talented and knowledgeable in what they do, in turn, generous with their time when providing students with information on different job and internship opportunities. They always want to put students in the best position to succeed, which is why they are one of the best resources on campus. I loved covering Student Tuesdays, which was an Instagram post every Tuesday asking students here on Buy their basic information like name, major, and expected graduation year. As well as asking them what their future career goal is and what courses, if any, influenced them to pursue this career. I made a lot of good contacts while doing Student Tuesday; I met students with whom we had a lot in common, and we shared many pleasant memories we encountered at Purchase. I have learned that a supportive environment is conducive during an internship and is not something to take for granted. The team meetings in the office were very in-depth; it allowed me and the other interns to be creative and share our great ideas. We spent a lot of time creating the Grad Fair Expo event, this was a tall order, but we fought through all the long discussions and meetings to make sure this event was a success. There was never a dull moment during this internship; I've always had it.
