Topic > A Study of the Corporate War Between Coca-Cola and Pepsi

Pepsi and Coca Cola have been at war since Pepsi was born centuries ago. 13 years after the creation of Coca Cola, its main competitor, Pepsi, founded its own company and brand. Coca Cola has been by far the most successful brand with expansion outside the United States, into Europe and surrounding areas, while Pepsi has struggled to stay out of bankruptcy. Pepsi and Coca Cola essentially have the exact product; Cola soft drink. Each brand has adopted their own “version” of each type/flavor of soft drink, each with a very distinct but similar flavor. Both cola products come in a packaged can with the word cola somewhere on it, respectfully with Coke or Pepsi on it. Pepsi Cola is typically written and displayed in a blue can with lettering. Coca Cola is displayed with a red can and red writing. Coca Cola is a MUCH higher value brand, thanks to numerous acquisitions of smaller companies, resulting in a huge umbrella of brands, all under the Coca Cola brand. Pepsi has acquired a few brands, but nowhere near the scale of Coca Cola. The two commercials to be compared will be the Pepsi Cola and Coca Cola commercials from the 2015 Super Bowl. The Pepsi Cola commercial featured many objects being transported through the air in a giant spaceship. The spaceship is later shown to be the Super Bowl football stadium with a huge Pepsi logo in the center all lit up. The idea behind it is that everything and everyone is attracted to Pepsi and if you want to be at the Super Bowl, you should drink Pepsi products. Pepsi is shown as the face behind the most talked about sporting event of the year, and therefore the viewer wants to be as popular as the Pepsi brand. Everyone talks about the Super Bowl, and if Super Bowl = Pepsi, everyone wants to be like Pepsi. In comparison, the Coca Cola commercial has an overall theme that revolves around the hashtag #MakeItHappy. The Coca Cola commercial contains a very uplifting message which is further consolidated at the end with the message “The world is what we make it”. Pay special attention to the word “we” because the Coca Cola brand consistently conveys a very happy and family-oriented message. Coke starts with random seconds of people drinking Coke, then continues on a laptop screen with a YouTube about a violent fight with the headline "News interview turns violent", which after a second is sprayed with Coke and replaced with the headline "News Interview Goes Happy." The next slide shows a woman sadly waiting for transportation next to a screen with a time long gone, sprayed with Coca Cola and transformed into the meme of the child with a fist that says "WE GOT THIS", making the woman smile with restored confidence in her to be able to wait for his passage. The next sequence shows a boy seeing a Facebook post that says "No one likes you U" and the boy is obviously upset by it. The screen becomes obscured by Coca Cola and changes the message to red text (iconic of Coca Cola), and now says "There's No One Like U #MakeItHappy", making the boy much happier. The final sequence shows the message "The world is what we make it" with the background being a very uplifting color. And, as always, it ends with a spinning bottle of Coke.
