After reading “Where the Red Fern Grows” I thought it was a fantastic book. The place where the book was set was in the rugged Ozark Mountains, in a beautiful valley. The main problem in the story I think is that Billy wants a pair of Coon Hounds to go hunting with. His parents don't have the money to do this, so he has to spend a considerable amount of time saving money from the fishermen he sells things to. So once he has the money, he has to travel a long path to get to where he is leading his hounds. There are also some mini-conflicts within it. Like when he is so devastated when he finds out how much those dogs cost and stops eating and doesn't sleep well. He then ends the problem by saving his hard-earned money and investing it in the Coon Hounds. The climax of the story is when Billy and his dogs are out hunting one night and encounter a mountain lion. His dogs fought hard against the lion. They end up killing the lion, but not before Old Dan is seriously injured and Little Ann is also injured, but not as badly as Old Dan. Then Old Dan ends up dead from his wounds. Then, due to the dogs bonding, little Ann dies of starvation and depression. This is pretty much the climax. Looking at Billy in the story you can see some important character traits such as his compassionate and loving attitude he has towards his dogs. He is also a very determined boy. Some reasoning that shows that he is loving and compassionate towards Billy is when on page 226 he says, “There, in the silica hills of the Ozarks, I fought for the lives of my dogs.” I fought with the only weapon I had, the sharp blade of a double-edged axe.' As I said before he is a determined boy. Some textual evidence that shows he is strong is on page 77 where he says "it would take days to bring him down" but then after days, he ended up taking him down. I thought it was full of very strong emotional parts, but also a lot of humorous parts. I liked how the book showed a close and realistic bond between Billy and the dogs.
