Topic > The Questions of Salisbury Cathedral - 1295

Salisbury Cathedral is one of a kind. It is still standing after hundreds of years. I recently saw the beautiful building while flipping through our art history textbook and it immediately caught my attention. I wanted to do more research on this cathedral and learn more. Who built it, why was it built, where is it located and what happened to the cathedral? These are some of the questions I want to answer and more. Salisbury Cathedral is the tallest and largest cathedral in the United Kingdom. It stands at four hundred and four feet. What makes the cathedral taller is the spire. A spire is the tower or pyramidal structure at the top of the cathedral. The cathedral also has the largest cloister in Britain, totaling eighty acres (Darwin, 2013). A cloister is a rectangular open space. The purpose of the cloister is to separate the monks from other men or surfers who do not live their lives in a church. Another amazing thing about this cathedral is that it has the oldest clock in the world, and it still works today. The watch does not have a dial and indicates the time only in hours and not in minutes. Originally the clock was located in a bell tower that is no longer present. The bell tower was demolished in 1792 (Darwin, 2013). The west side of the cathedral contains two staircases. They head towards a triple window. The lower level has two small doors. At the doors it is richly decorated with columns, quatrefoil motifs, trefoil motifs and many diapers. There are seventy-three statues in niches throughout the cathedral (Richard, 2009). There are a total of one hundred and thirty niches. In the cathedral there are many paintings. John Constable was a famous artist... at the center of the history of paper. The fact that the architect is so detailed is incredible considering the lack of technology and mechanical power during the 1200s. Some would say Venice. Some may prefer the Taj Mahal. But there are many who have traveled the world, seen the most beautiful places and still believe that the most beautiful building on Earth is Salisbury Cathedral. Salisbury Cathedral has inspired many people around the world. It has beautiful statues and paintings inside and outside the cathedral. It has survived for hundreds of years through wars, plagues, and under different rulers. Not everyone thinks this building is a work of art, but for me it is one of the greatest buildings ever built. The architects and men who built it overcame many difficulties and triumphed and ended up creating a part of history that will last for another seven years and hopefully more..
