Topic > My Plans for Teaching High School English

This week in class, we started with two discussions with other students we didn't already know. The first starting point of the conversation was “I am confident about . . .” and the second was “I am inspired by. . .” For me, I said that I am very confident about my writing abilities, as I have been fortunate enough to have five of my plays produced in some capacity, two of which have been published. For the second question, I answered that I was most inspired by my old high school English teacher, as he was the person who made me want to pursue a career in education. I plan to follow in his footsteps and teach high school English. These conversation starters at the beginning of each lesson are helpful because they help people who may not feel comfortable meeting new people get used to the idea of speaking in front of a group of people they may not know. We received several handouts detailing what the body needs to stay healthy. One that struck me is the chart that lets you determine how many daily calories you should be consuming, which is actually more than I previously thought (2,800 instead of 2,000). The part of the class that I enjoyed the most, however, was when the instructor shared his personal stories as they relate to the incoming educators. I always appreciate accounts of real life problems and how a real person deals with them more than the standard fact-based lecture. What struck me most was the story of the male teacher who was fired due to a false accusation of inappropriate conduct with a female student. This is what I will have to pay attention to and be very careful of myself in the future, as it is becoming more and more difficult for teachers.
