In doing so, I learned how to apply my thoughts and ideas to challenging questions which in turn helped me learn to think critically on the page. I appreciated that taking this course changed my view of service quality and the importance of adopting lean thinking provided me with knowledge that can be used to shape my future management style. Week 1. We learned about supply chains, cross-functional decision making, and operations management concepts. The discussion forums allowed me to better understand how to apply the week's learning objectives. While researching an organization, I chose iHOP to discuss their operational strategies. Since operations are the heart of any institution, it was important to identify the fundamental concepts that determine how they deliver goods and services to customers. One final thing to note, according to Schroeder (2017), is that “operations can limit a firm's ability to develop new products and make them more expensive to produce” (p. 48). What this tells me is that value should be maximized and decisions about process, quality, etc. should be emphasized to eliminate any bottlenecks in any business. In fact, in week 2 I learned about some of these processes. Week 2. I enjoyed learning about product process strategies and product flow processes. This is where I learned about the different types of processes such as batch, assembly line and continuous. I believe these types of processes are a great way to organize the process needed to make a product or service or how products, customers and information flow within an industry. Business management to me means how well you can manage a company and its employees. It's the reality of what happens every day in businesses that is connected to operations. In week 3, I gained a better understanding of business management by talking about lean systems and employee-manager relationships. Week 3. I learned about how lean thinking works, from how value is delivered to customers, to how processes are improved – all with direction from managers. Managers can spot low levels of performance, identify resources to create change, and empower employees who can easily identify problems in customer services and processes that slow down value (Saunders, 2018). Therefore, I believe that the lean system is the most ingenious in any business management. Week 4 and 5. I thought the course had become more of a challenge.
