Brian Wansink's work demonstrates how little control we have over our decisions about food, and he has designed a series of experiments to demonstrate this. His work is extremely entertaining, and I imagine that's because many of us are so struck by how easy it is to get confused by food. He constantly wonders how the environment influences the choices we make and how our environments have led to constant excessive consumption. It implements some of the same strategies used by the food industry in an effort to demonstrate their success. During the SU visit, Wansink described a series of scenarios he experimented with to study his subjects' eating behaviors. He also explained his “laboratory” which consists of a fairly typical food environment that he uses to study behavior. Wansink described many of his studies that I am familiar with, but his ability to entertain audiences underlined how little we know about our own behavior.
